Lucky Call - Page 5

“That’s not quite it,” said Call.  “It’s more of a curse, a curse I tell you.”

“This has been an amazing evening, but I have a paper to put to bed,” said the editor of the Orillia Times.

For the first time, in more than  fifty years, the paper was late to bed. The front page was held for an important announcement.

The full story of the life of one of Orillia’s most wonderful characters, is in Monday’s edition.  On Monday, the paper sold out within minutes.

The editorial was to the effect that having the courage to live your life in accordance with your own precepts is a feat few of us dare attempt to accomplish.  When it’s time to cash in our chips, may all of us be blessed with the style that Shannon Callaghan exhibited.  A century from now the Lucky Call Scholarship Fund winners will not have much of a clue, as to the person who made their change of fortune possible.  Shannon Callaghan cannot become a legend for he was one while he was among us.  He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.  His life was truly a lucky call.
