The initial purpose of the Alphabetical format is to make it easy to determine which words you know really well and which words you have not tackled yet. All the crossword puzzles are focused on a slice of the dictionary so that you can easily look up a word that has given you trouble.
The Etymological approach has been adopted in order to facilitate a rapid influx of new vocabulary. There is nothing better than a logical approach for imbibing new words.
