Chapter Three

"There he is again," Will said in awe, as the owl flew through a break in the trees, for moment blocking the moon before plummeting down a steep glade and sinking into brooding darkness that lay still over the lake.

"That's the last we'll see of him tonight," Darlene said.

"What makes you say that?"

"When he plummets like that he is onto something.  By now he will surely be feasting.  By first light, he will have brought home food for his brood."

"I don't even want to think about it," Will said with a shudder.

"Wouldn't you like to see him feed his babies?"

"Yes, I would but I wouldn't want to see what he is feeding his babies,"  Will replied.

"I always knew that you were a wimp," Darlene said.

"And I always knew that you were a bossy boots too big for her britches," retorted Will.

Although Will's unease remained in place, the night began to lessen.  A glimmer of light now un-silvered and diffused touched the highest mountain top.  Soon the crest of the mountain on the far side of the law lost its sense of brooding menace and began to take on definition, which soon grew into majesty.

"If there is an Unspotted Saw-whet, there must be a Spotted one as well," Will said softly, disarmingly, almost off-handedly.

Darlene was about to go into a tirade about the improbability of the existence of a Spotted Saw-whet when she realized that she wasn't willing to take the argument to either the point of certainty or of uncertainty for her desire began to weaken when a thought of her father's kisses rambled through her head.  She was sidetracked for the moment and then realized that she wanted nothing more to do with the likes of he who had corrupted her father's kisses so readily.

She was willing to leave the Spotted Saw-whet alone because she was afraid that it would prove to be just another dot cog sham.  Best to leave it on its own along with the Song that was supposed to have been sung by Sam.  How in the world would she ever be able to explain it to Will the Wee Wizard? That was another story entirely.  She despaired at the thought.
